Why Choose Tall Riding Boots?
When deciding which riding boots to buy, there are a few key factors to consider, especially the benefits of tall boots compared to short boots and chaps.
The first is convenience. With tall boots you only have one piece of footwear to remember. Have you ever arrived at the yard or a show with just your short boots and had to improvise with a set of old polo bandages? Not ideal.
The second, and more important benefit is the fit and feel. Tall boots provide a closer contact with the horse and reduce bulk around the ankle. Many brands now offer extensive size charts which may seem daunting, but in reality allow you to achieve a made-to-measure feel that enhances comfort and performance.
How to Measure for the Perfect Fit
I highly recommend a visit to the store where the staff will greet you with a warm smile, share their expertise and guide you through an impressive display of tall riding boots. For the most accurate fit, wear breeches and the socks you plan to ride in. If you can’t, don’t worry as the team will happily lend you a pair of breeches.
If you’re measuring at home:
- Avoid thick socks or jeans, as they can add up to a centimetre to your calf measurement.
- Use a soft measuring tape around the widest part of your calf, about three-quarters of the way up.
- For height, stand barefoot, bend your knees slightly, and measure from the floor to the back of the bent knee.
- Always measure both legs, as they may not be the same, especially if you have had an injury.
Take the measurement of the tallest leg and the larger calf. When choosing height, always opt for a slightly taller pair. For example, if you measure 46cm and the choice is 45cm or 47cm, go for the 47cm. Boots naturally drop as they wear in, and a heel raiser can be used in the early stages.
If you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to call the team. They even offer video calls to guide you through the process.
